New Delhi: An Air India flight arriving from Kochi had a narrow escape on Monday morning after it veered off the rain-soaked primary runway during landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The incident occurred at 9:27 AM on July 21, 2025, as heavy rains continued to lash the city.
The aircraft sustained damage, including grass lodged in the rear section and visible impact on one of its engines. Minor damage to the runway was also reported. Fortunately, all passengers and crew members on board were safe and unharmed.
The aircraft has been grounded for a detailed inspection. Emergency response teams were promptly activated to handle the situation. Airport authorities confirmed that operations have now shifted to the secondary runway (14/32) to ensure continuity while the primary runway (09/27) undergoes evaluation and minor repairs.
The incident coincides with ongoing torrential rains in Mumbai, which have caused significant waterlogging and travel delays. Passengers have been advised to confirm their flight status and allow extra time for travel to the airport due to potential traffic congestion.
It remains unclear whether the closure of the primary runway will result in further flight delays or cancellations.
