New Delhi: In the midst of the Champions Trophy 2025, held in Dubai, KL Rahul has opened up about the pressure of competing with Rishabh Pant for a spot in India’s ODI team. Rahul, who has been preferred over Pant by head coach Gautam Gambhir, acknowledged the constant temptation for the team management to choose between the two talented players. This decision has sparked debate among fans and former cricketers, with some backing Rahul’s consistent performance and others advocating for Pant’s explosive potential.
Rahul, known for his versatility as a wicketkeeper-batter, admitted that Pant’s presence always poses a challenge. “He’s obviously a very, very talented player and he’s shown all of us what he can do, and how aggressive and how quickly he can change the game,” Rahul said during a press conference. Despite this, Rahul emphasized that he focuses on his own game rather than competing with Pant. “For me, if I’m given the opportunity, I try and see what I can do best. I am not trying to compete with Rishabh, or I am not trying to play like him,” he added.
In the Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, Rahul demonstrated his form with a composed 41* from 47 deliveries. His role as a wicketkeeper-batter has been crucial, especially given the tight schedule of the tournament, which leaves little room for experimentation with the playing XI.
