Panaji: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has strongly opposed the proposed demolition of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, urging authorities to respect public sentiment and reconsider the move.
Amonkar appealed to the Mormugao Port Authority to withdraw the proposal and seek a peaceful and respectful resolution through dialogue. He stressed that for millions, Shivaji Maharaj symbolises pride, courage and identity.
Warning against the emotional impact of the decision, the MLA said that removing the statue could deeply hurt public sentiments and undermine cultural values across the region.
He reiterated the need for consultations before taking any action, stating that the issue carries significant cultural and emotional importance.
