MARGAO: The Anant (Babu) Narcinva Naik Centenary Celebrations Committee on Wednesday unveiled an extensive year-long programme to commemorate the birth centenary of former MLA, former Leader of Opposition and former Industries Minister Anant (Babu) Narcinva Naik, with celebrations scheduled from August 19, 2026, to August 19, 2027.
Addressing a press conference after the committee’s first meeting in Margao, Chairman Shrinivas Dempo said the centenary was not just an occasion to remember a distinguished leader but an opportunity to inspire future generations through Naik’s vision, integrity and unwavering commitment to public service.
“The Committee is committed to organising meaningful programmes that celebrate his legacy and values throughout the year,” Dempo said.
He described Naik as one of Goa’s tallest visionary leaders whose contributions extended beyond politics into social work, spirituality, art and culture, while playing a key role in safeguarding Goa’s unique identity.
The inaugural programme on August 19, 2026, will mark the formal launch of the centenary celebrations and feature the premiere of the documentary “Loknayak.”
The committee also approved a series of educational, cultural, social and community initiatives. These include pursuing the release of a commemorative postal stamp, launching a community welfare initiative in Naik’s memory, organising educational, cultural, sports and social programmes across Goa, and holding a legislators’ debate on democratic values and Goa’s identity.
The year-long celebrations will culminate on August 19, 2027, with a valedictory function and the release of the commemorative volume “Anant-Infinite,” chronicling Naik’s life, leadership and enduring legacy.
Committee members also held an interactive discussion and resolved to organise programmes that preserve and promote the ideals of public service, integrity, democratic values and Goa’s identity so that Anant (Babu) Narcinva Naik’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
The press conference was attended by Vice Chairmen M.K. Shaikh and Maendra Alvares, Family Representative Pandurang (Bhai) Naik, Secretary Anil Pai, Treasurer Gautam Verlekar, Convenor Vishal Pai Cacode and other committee members.
