ANJUNA: Anjuna Beach, which had been lying in darkness, is illuminated once again following repeated public interventions and a candlelight protest demanding action from the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC).
The issue was raised initially to highlight the lack of lighting at the beach. When the problem remained unresolved, a second intervention followed, with a candlelight protest and an ultimatum calling on GTDC to complete the work within a stipulated timeframe.
Following these efforts, the beach lights have been restored. The campaigners welcomed GTDC’s response and acknowledged the action taken after their intervention.
However, they stressed that restoring the lights is only the first step. They have called for consistent maintenance of the lighting infrastructure and proper completion of all necessary work to prevent the issue from recurring.
The development has also raised questions about why repeated interventions and public protests were necessary to address a basic public amenity.
The campaigners said the outcome highlights the role of public participation in bringing civic issues to the attention of authorities and securing action through sustained engagement and demands for accountability.
While Anjuna Beach is illuminated once again, the focus now remains on ensuring that the lights continue to function reliably in the days ahead.
