PANAJI: In a move that is set to further complicate the already congested traffic scenario in Goa, the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) has issued a notice announcing the closure of Gaundalim Road. This closure, effective from February 25, 2025, to January 19, 2026, is necessitated by the construction of a road overbridge at the Dhavje railway gate.
The affected stretch of Gaundalim Road spans from the Fisherman Training Centre in Ella, Old Goa, to the Dempo Football Ground, and will remain closed for approximately 11 months.
This closure marks the third significant road disruption in the state, following the recent closures of the Old Mandovi Bridge and the Juvem bridge.
These successive closures have had a profound impact on traffic in Goa, exacerbating congestion and travel times for commuters.
To mitigate the disruption, GSIDC has outlined a traffic diversion plan.
Vehicular traffic will be diverted via the Banastarim route or the Corlim IDC area, although this diversion is only applicable for light motor vehicles. For detailed information on the road closure and the traffic diversion plan, the public is advised to visit the GSIDC website, where the relevant details have been uploaded.
The construction of the road overbridge at Dhavje railway gate is a long-standing demand of the local residents, who have been grappling with the inconvenience and safety risks associated with train crossings.
Once completed, the overbridge is expected to significantly alleviate the long queues and congestion that commuters currently face during train crossings.
The ongoing road closures in Goa have highlighted the pressing need for infrastructure development and traffic management solutions. While the short-term inconvenience is undeniable, the long-term benefits of these projects, including improved safety and reduced congestion, are anticipated to enhance the overall commuting experience in the state.
As Goa continues to navigate these infrastructure upgrades, residents and visitors alike are urged to plan their routes accordingly and adhere to the diversion guidelines to minimize disruptions.
