New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday presented India’s vision for the responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI) at the G7 Summit, calling for global cooperation to ensure the technology remains safe, inclusive and centred on human welfare.
Addressing the session on “Ensuring a Safe, Rapid and Efficient Rollout of AI” in France, PM Modi said the true measure of AI lies not in the power of machines but in their ability to improve the lives of ordinary people.
“AI’s transformative potential is widely known, having touched all aspects of human life. However, the true test of AI is not how powerful our machines become. Its real test lies in how much it empowers ordinary human beings,” he said.
The Prime Minister put forward four key suggestions for the global development and deployment of AI. These include promoting safe-by-design AI systems, creating common standards and testing frameworks, strengthening international cooperation against deepfakes and cyber fraud, and ensuring that AI benefits countries of the Global South.
Highlighting India’s commitment to responsible AI, PM Modi referred to initiatives such as the AI Impact Summit held in Delhi earlier this year and the country’s MANAV Vision. He also cited the views of Pope Leo XIV, who recently emphasised the importance of human values, inclusivity and meaningful human control in AI development.
The Prime Minister stressed that child safety must remain a priority as AI technologies become more widespread. He warned that while AI can enhance learning and creativity, it can also expose children to misinformation, deepfakes and exploitation if adequate safeguards are not in place.
Calling for equitable access to AI technologies, Modi said democratic nations should have the tools necessary to protect critical information infrastructure and effectively counter emerging cyber threats.
