New Delhi: The investigation into the recent attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee has taken a fresh political turn after several of the accused arrested in connection with the incident were allegedly found to have links with former TMC MLA Lovely Maitra.
The incident occurred during Banerjee’s visit to South 24 Parganas on Saturday, where he was meeting families affected by alleged post-poll violence. According to police, stones, eggs, and shoes were allegedly hurled at the TMC leader, resulting in minor injuries. Videos from the scene also showed chaotic moments in which attempts were allegedly made to manhandle him.
Investigators have arrested five individuals and detained two others after identifying suspects through CCTV footage and video recordings. Those arrested include Tapan Maity, Akash Gayen, Kajal Das, Debasish Dutta, and Nirmalya Sengupta, also known as Joy.
The controversy intensified after BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar alleged that some of the arrested individuals were associated with the Trinamool Congress and maintained close ties with former MLA Lovely Maitra. Reports citing investigative sources claimed that Tapan Maity, Joy Sengupta, Kajal Das, and Debasish Dutta had links to the former legislator.
Maitra, however, strongly denied the allegations and accused the BJP of attempting to portray local public resentment as a coordinated political conspiracy. She also claimed that several women involved in the protests were active BJP supporters.
Meanwhile, the family of Joy Sengupta, identified as a local TMC leader, rejected allegations against him and maintained that he had been falsely implicated. They stated that he had been associated with the party since 1998 and had even advised Banerjee against visiting the area due to prevailing tensions.
As the investigation continues, the incident has triggered a fierce political confrontation, with the TMC and BJP exchanging accusations over responsibility for the attack and the identities of those involved.
