New Delhi: The introduction of a new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on certain UPI payments above ₹2,000 has triggered concern among retailers, with industry representatives warning that additional costs could encourage some small businesses to favour cash transactions. Under the revised framework, coming into effect from October 15, 2026, a 0.4% MDR will apply to specified person to merchant UPI transactions above ₹2,000, subject to a maximum charge of ₹300.
