New Delhi: A brief but tense standoff unfolded along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya after a 55 year old Bangladeshi national was left stranded in no-man’s land amid a dispute over his identity and nationality.
The incident occurred at Nandirchar in the South West Garo Hills district, near Mahendraganj, where personnel of the Border Security Force and the Border Guard Bangladesh engaged in a heated exchange over the man’s citizenship status.
The man, identified as Sati Rajbanshi, was allegedly apprehended after entering India illegally through the Meghalaya border. Following his detention, BSF personnel attempted to return him to Bangladesh as part of a deportation process.
However, the situation escalated when BGB personnel reportedly refused to accept him, claiming that he was an Indian national. The disagreement resulted in the man being stranded temporarily in the border zone between the two countries.
Videos circulating on social media showed security personnel from both sides arguing over the man’s identity while he appeared confused and distressed by the situation. Bangladeshi border guards were seen questioning him about his address and nationality, while local residents gathered on the Bangladesh side of the border to witness the developments.
Efforts to resolve the issue through flag meetings between local commanders of the two border forces initially failed, prolonging the standoff. The matter was eventually settled after Bangladeshi authorities verified the man’s identity and accepted him into their custody.
According to officials, the man was identified as a resident of Rajshahi district in Bangladesh. The episode has reignited discussions surrounding illegal migration, border management and the handling of cross border deportations.
BSF sources alleged that Bangladesh had initially attempted to deny the man’s nationality and accused the neighbouring country of trying to create controversy over the incident. The development comes amid intensified efforts by authorities in northeastern India to identify and deport undocumented migrants, with Assam continuing its campaign against illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.
