New Delhi:
In the wake of India’s disappointing performance in the recent Test series against Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced several stringent guidelines aimed at enhancing team unity and performance. During a recent review meeting in Mumbai, BCCI officials, including President Roger Binny and secretary elect Devajit Saikia, along with captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir, discussed and finalized these new rules.
The most notable change involves restricting the stay of players’ families during overseas tours. For tours lasting 45 days or more, wives and family members will be allowed to stay with the players for a maximum of 14 days. For shorter tours, this limit is reduced to seven days. This decision follows observations that the presence of family members for the entire duration of the tour, as seen during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, may have impacted the players’ performance.
Another significant rule mandates that all players must travel together in the team bus, eliminating the practice of senior players traveling separately. This move is designed to foster greater team unity and spirit among the squad. The BCCI believes that this collective travel will help in building a more cohesive team environment.
Additionally, the BCCI has decided to limit the tenure of the support staff to a maximum of three years. This decision comes after criticism of the current coaching staff’s performance, led by Gautam Gambhir, following back-to-back Test series losses to New Zealand and Australia.
The performance of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is also under scrutiny. Both players had a dismal run in the Test series against Australia, with Rohit managing just 31 runs and Kohli averaging 23.75 despite a century in the opening game. Their future in the Test team will be evaluated based on their performance in the upcoming ODI Champions Trophy and other future assignments.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has denied any rift between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, dismissing media reports that suggested otherwise. Shukla emphasized that the recent review meeting has outlined a clear path forward for the team and that decisions regarding captaincy and player selection will be made based on performance and not speculation.
These new guidelines are part of the BCCI’s broader effort to address the team’s recent underperformance and to ensure a more disciplined and unified approach moving forward.
