BICHOLIM: A public function in Bhatwadi-Latambarcem turned chaotic on Friday after a sudden swarm of honeybees attacked attendees, injuring several people, including Chandrakant Shetye.
The incident occurred during a transformer foundation-laying ceremony that was attended by local representatives and residents. According to eyewitnesses, the programme was proceeding as planned when a swarm of bees suddenly descended on the gathering, catching everyone off guard.
Panic spread quickly as people ran in different directions to escape the attack. The MLA was seen rushing away from the venue as the swarm intensified. A Zilla Panchayat member and several others were also stung during the incident.
In the immediate aftermath, five to six injured persons were taken to the Bicholim Health Centre for treatment. One individual, who suffered more serious injuries due to multiple stings, was later shifted to a private hospital for advanced medical care.
The situation created tension in the area for some time, but locals and organisers acted swiftly to assist the injured and restore order. Prompt response ensured that those affected received timely medical attention.
The incident has raised concerns about safety arrangements at public events, particularly in open areas where such unexpected situations can arise.
