New Delhi: West Bengal is witnessing a major political transition as the Bharatiya Janata Party prepares to form its first government in the state following its massive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Suspense continues over the announcement of the next Chief Minister, with Suvendu Adhikari emerging as the leading contender for the top post.
According to party sources, senior BJP leader Amit Shah is expected to hold a crucial meeting with newly elected BJP MLAs on Friday to finalise the leadership decision. BJP leaders have indicated that clarity on the Chief Minister’s name is likely to emerge by evening.
The party has already announced that the swearing in ceremony of the new government will take place on May 9, coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to attend the oath taking ceremony. During his final election rally in Barrackpore, Modi had expressed confidence that the BJP would form the next government in the state and said he would return for the swearing in ceremony after the results.
The BJP secured a decisive victory in the Assembly elections by winning 207 seats, while the ruling All India Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats after ruling the state for 15 years.
The political situation intensified further after outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly refused to resign following the election outcome. Subsequently, Governor R. N. Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, paving the way for the formation of the BJP’s first government in the state.
With heightened political activity, tight security, and intense speculation surrounding the leadership choice, all attention now remains focused on the BJP’s final decision regarding the next Chief Minister of West Bengal.
