New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended greetings to the people of West Bengal on Paschim Banga Diwas, describing the state as a key contributor to India’s cultural and intellectual development. He said West Bengal has played an important role in shaping the country’s identity through its long standing traditions and achievements.
In his message, Modi highlighted the state’s wide ranging contributions in fields such as literature, music, art, spirituality, science, trade, commerce and social reform. He said West Bengal has repeatedly strengthened and enriched India’s national consciousness through its historical and cultural influence.
The Prime Minister also referred to the significance of June 20 in the state’s history, noting its association with a major turning point linked to the creation of West Bengal. He also mentioned the ongoing 125th birth anniversary commemorations of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, stating that his contribution to the historical developments of the region remains important in public memory.
Modi added that the central government remains committed to working with the state administration for the welfare and development of the people of West Bengal. He said efforts would continue to support the aspirations of citizens and promote overall progress in the state.
Paschim Banga Diwas is observed on June 20 and is linked to events surrounding the reorganisation of Bengal in 1947, when the legislative assembly voted on the partition of the province, eventually leading to the formation of West Bengal within India.
The day carries different political interpretations in the state. While one section associates it with the historical decision that shaped the region’s present identity, others prefer to observe a different state day on an alternative date linked to the Bengali calendar.
The occasion is marked annually with political statements and reflections on Bengal’s role in India’s history, culture and national development.
