PANAJI: Tensions flared within the Bhandari Samaj after its president, Devanand Naik, leveled serious accusations against Upendra Gaonkar, a former committee head, for allegedly misappropriating funds.
The controversy erupted shortly after a group led by Sanjiv Naik announced plans to conduct a private community census, with Gaonkar reportedly associated with the initiative.
Responding to the move, Devanand Naik held a press conference and alleged that Gaonkar had been expelled from the Samaj five years ago for allegedly embezzling ₹9 lakh.
He added that a police complaint had already been filed at the Panaji police station, and the organisation intends to approach the court to seek formal registration of an FIR.
Raising further concerns, Naik warned the public that any caste certificates issued or signed by Gaonkar would be considered invalid, as Gaonkar no longer holds any official post in the Samaj. He cautioned that anyone attempting to use such certificates would face action for presenting forged documents.
The incident has highlighted deepening divisions within the community leadership, particularly over the authority and legitimacy of recent decisions involving community representation and documentation.
