CALANGUTE: Calangute Police seized liquor worth approximately ₹43.39 lakh during a raid conducted at Porbawado, Calangute, on June 19, uncovering an alleged illegal liquor storage and distribution operation.
The raid was carried out following specific information received by the police regarding the illegal possession and sale of liquor. A team comprising PSI Prajit Mandrekar, HC Vidyanand Amonkar, PC Amir Garad, PC Vijay Naik and PC Raj conducted the operation at a premises located opposite Boho Bliss Hotel in Porbawado.
During the raid, police allegedly found liquor of various brands being stored without valid invoices, permits or other supporting documents. The stock was reportedly intended for sale to local retailers.
According to the police, preliminary investigations suggest that the liquor was being possessed and traded without payment of the requisite excise duties, taxes and other statutory charges payable to the Government of Goa. Authorities suspect that the activity was aimed at evading government revenue, resulting in wrongful loss to the State Exchequer.
A total of 1,058.4 litres of liquor of different brands, valued at approximately ₹43,39,500, was seized during the operation in the presence of panch witnesses.
Based on a complaint lodged by PSI Prajit Mandrekar, Calangute Police have registered an offence under the relevant provisions of law. The identity of the accused has not been disclosed by the police.
Further investigation is underway under the supervision of PI Laxi G. Amonkar, Officer-in-Charge of Calangute Police Station. The investigation is being monitored by SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe and Superintendent of Police, North Goa, Harishchandra Madkaikar. Police said efforts are ongoing to ascertain the source of the liquor and identify any other persons involved in the alleged illegal trade.
