PANAJI: Casinos in Goa have been ordered to stop their operations on October 2 as a mark of respect to Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi, celebrated as the father of the nation, was born on October 2 1869. His birth anniversary is celebrated as the national holiday of Gandhi Jayanti every year in India.
“The Government of Goa, in order to pay homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, has decided that all gaming operations at casinos in the State should remain closed on October 2,” states a notification released by the Home Department to this effect.
All license holders for casinos “shall stop” operating their establishments with effect from 12 a.m. on October 2 to 12 a.m. on October 3, according to a notification from Under Secretary (Home) Manesh Hari Kedar.
Kedar stated that strict adherence to these instructions will be followed.
Gandhi Jayanti Day is a dry day on which alcohol cannot be sold or served in commercial places. Despite this, local activists in the capital exposed the issue more than ten years ago, and casinos continued to strut their stuff as normal.
Since then, the State administration has exercised caution when ordering the industry to remain closed on October 2 of each year, and this year is no exception.
