Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir cricketers hailed fast bowler Auqib Nabi Dar’s maiden India Test call-up as a historic milestone, describing it as a proud moment for the region and an inspiration for aspiring young cricketers.
The 29 year old pacer from Baramulla was named in India’s Test squad on Monday as the replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming two match Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15 in Galle.
Auqib’s selection marks a landmark achievement for Jammu and Kashmir cricket, as he becomes the first player from the Union Territory to earn a place in India’s Test squad. Former all rounder Parvez Rasool remains the only cricketer from the region to have represented India at the international level, having featured in one ODI and one T20I.
Following the announcement, Auqib’s teammates from the Jammu and Kashmir Ranji Trophy squad congratulated him and described the achievement as a dream come true for the entire cricketing fraternity in the region.
Several players praised Auqib’s dedication, saying his selection was the result of nearly a decade of hard work and perseverance. They expressed hope that his journey would motivate young cricketers across Jammu and Kashmir to believe that representing India is possible through determination and consistent performances.
Auqib has enjoyed a remarkable rise in domestic cricket. He finished as the leading wicket taker in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season and played a crucial role in helping Jammu and Kashmir secure their maiden Ranji Trophy title.
The right arm fast bowler has featured in 43 first class matches, claiming 162 wickets while also contributing 999 runs, highlighting his value as a dependable lower order batter.
The year 2026 has been a breakthrough season for Auqib. Along with making his IPL debut, he has now earned his first India Test call up, taking another major step towards establishing himself on the international stage and giving Jammu and Kashmir one of its most significant moments in cricket history.
