Auckland: India captain Shubman Gill has confirmed the team’s top-four batting combination for the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, while indicating that the middle order will follow a flexible approach depending on match conditions.
The series begins in Auckland on November 4, with Gill leading India in the first three matches. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer will take charge of the final two ODIs in Mount Maunganui after Gill leaves the squad to prepare for the upcoming two-Test series.
Speaking ahead of the opening match, Gill confirmed that he, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer will occupy the top four positions in the batting order.
However, the captain indicated that India could experiment with the fifth and sixth positions. KL Rahul and Axar Patel are expected to share these responsibilities, with the team considering the opposition and match situation before deciding their batting positions.
Gill explained that the top four consist entirely of right-handed batters, making Axar’s left-handed batting an important option. Rahul could also be promoted depending on the requirements of the innings.
Meanwhile, Gill dismissed concerns surrounding his previous neck discomfort, confirming that he had completed his preparations without experiencing any problems. He revealed that he had batted for nearly one and a half hours and completed fielding practice comfortably.
New Zealand has not been an especially successful destination for Gill in ODI cricket. The Indian captain has scored 124 runs in five previous ODI appearances in the country.
Determined to improve that record, Gill has been working extensively on his preparations. He has also reportedly arranged and personally paid for accommodation for four to five net bowlers to ensure quality practice sessions ahead of the series.
With a demanding international schedule ahead, Gill will be looking to lead India to a strong start against New Zealand.
