CANACONA: After communication cables laying contractor dug a trench at Catebagha; the road portion just beside the Galgibagha river has sunk and developed cracks all along the road; locals fear that soon the road will collapse into the river if the authorities don’t stabilize the about 500mt portion with a retaining wall.
Speaking to the media, Diogo Da’ Silva, along with locals, blamed the PWD internal roads officials for allowing the communication cables laying company to dig a trench between the road and the river as there is hardly a gap of half-meter between the two he allegedly.
The road leading to Poinguinim from Galgibagha passes through Magdal and Catebagha where it passes just on the bank of the Galgibagha river, on the riverside the about two-metre portion is stabilized by stones, once the stones got disturbed due to digging and the vibrations the road without any support on the riverside got sunk creating huge cracks along the length of about 500mt he said.
Agnelo Barretto, another resident, also blamed the PWD internal roads for permitting the contractor to dig the more than a metre deep trench in spite of knowing that the road at this portion is weak.
Another resident said that even a child who is studying in the fourth standard could tell that the wall supports the road in a traditional way, and any disturbance to that will be disastrous.
Diogo Da’ Silva fears that cracks will lead to the collapse of some portion of the road.
“Buses and trucks pass by this road, and if a bus full of passengers fall in the river when the river is flooded, there is no chance for any of the occupants of the bus to survive” Da’ Silva warned.
Sunil Paigankar, a civil engineer and a social activist from the village, informed that some locals had informed him that the soil underneath the riverside is washed away due to fast-moving water during the monsoon. It is in the best interest of everyone that the PWD officials inspect the road and stabilize it so that a major tragedy can be averted.
