NEW DELHI: India have suffered a setback ahead of the second T20I against New Zealand, with wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan ruled out of the match due to a low grade right adductor strain. His absence has opened the door for teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to enter the playing XI.
The injury occurred during the opening T20I of the series, prompting the team management to make changes to the batting order. Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer were promoted ahead of Kishan, who usually occupies the number three position.
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained that the decision was influenced by Kishan’s groin discomfort rather than a tactical experiment. The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed that its medical team would continue monitoring the batter’s recovery.
Sooryavanshi has emerged as a strong contender to replace Kishan for the second match. Kotak indicated that the young batter could get his opportunity, depending on the team’s requirements and medical assessments.
The teenager has been waiting for his chance after remaining on the bench throughout India’s T20I series against the West Indies and the opening match against New Zealand. His potential inclusion would offer him an opportunity to demonstrate his ability at the international level.
India captain Shreyas Iyer had earlier explained that the team was cautious about changing its established opening combination, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson delivering consistent performances. However, Kishan’s injury could now force the management to reconsider its options.
The second T20I will provide India with an opportunity to assess its batting combinations while maintaining momentum in the series. Sooryavanshi’s possible inclusion has added another talking point ahead of the contest, with fans eager to see whether the young batter gets his long awaited opportunity.
With Kishan unavailable for the match, India’s team management will look to find the right balance as the side prepares for the next encounter against New Zealand.
