PANAJI: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) intends to move some ninety street vendors who have already registered formally with the civic body and to draw boundaries around hawker zones at various points throughout the city under its jurisdiction.
The CCP Mayor, Rohit Monserrate, stated that the process of determining workable locations with sufficient public space is ongoing and that the precise locations have not yet been determined.
However, according to Monserrate, a few locations have already been chosen to host the hawking zones, including the parking lot close to the Don Bosco school, the vicinity of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), and a couple in Caranzalem.
For a number of years, the problem of appropriately situating street vendors in hawking zones has persisted. These vendors primarily sell fruits, ice cream, and street cuisine from mobile kiosks.
A food hawking area that was previously in operation at the parking lot next to the Don Bosco school was shut down as a result of complaints from the locals about the disturbance and trash it used to produce in the neighborhood.
The topic has frequently gotten entangled in controversy, with vendors, especially those running bhel-puri stands next to the Miramar beach, accusing CCP officials of favoritism and patronage.
Meanwhile, Monserrate announced that the matter will be approached methodically this time, recorded during a CCP meeting, and sent to the Collector for notification of every hawking zone.
