New Delhi: In a significant development, the Central Government has launched consultations with all major political parties to build consensus for initiating impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma, a senior judge who has come under scrutiny after unaccounted cash was reportedly discovered at his official residence in New Delhi.
Sources confirmed that the government has reached out to members across party lines in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, aiming to gather the necessary political backing and signatures required to table an impeachment motion in Parliament.
The incident, though not followed by an official FIR so far, has sparked outrage within the legislative corridors. Several MPs voiced strong concerns over the lack of immediate legal action against the judge, raising questions about transparency and judicial accountability.
An internal fact-finding committee, constituted by the Supreme Court, has reportedly recommended that the allegations be treated with utmost seriousness and that Justice Varma’s removal should be actively considered.
At the time of the alleged cash recovery, Justice Varma was serving on deputation to the Delhi High Court. Following the controversy, he was transferred to the Allahabad High Court. Justice Varma, however, has denied all accusations, insisting that the cash recovered was not his.
As the Centre prepares to initiate formal proceedings, the push for consensus across party lines indicates the sensitivity and constitutional gravity of the situation. If pursued, the impeachment would mark a rare and serious action against a sitting member of the judiciary.
