PORIEM: Tension arose in Poriem amid a disagreement between two groups of devotees about who had the right to perform rites at a temple, resulting in a stone-pelting incident that reportedly injured a police officer.
Additionally, there were attempts to block the Keri-Belagavi highway in the vicinity, but the police force stopped them.
The Sattari Sub-Divisional Magistrate had made the decision to order the temple to remain closed until December 24 due to persistent disputes between the two parties over who had the right to perform rituals.
When some members of one group performed rites early on Friday morning, the other group protested, which heightened tensions.
To demand that prosecutions be brought against those who had broken the prior order, some members protested outside the SDM’s office in the afternoon.
Following discussions between the SDM and Videsh Shirodkar, the Valpoi police inspector, it was ultimately decided to file a case against four individuals.
Members of their organization became enraged when the Valpoi police arrested four people, so they raced to the temple grounds and demanded that the order that had closed it until December 24 be revoked as well as that the cases against the four people be dropped.
According to reports, one police officer was hurt in the incident, and several people are accused of throwing stones. Some people tried to block the Belagavi-Keri highway, but police stopped them.
Police and government representatives were scheduled to visit the scene to assess the situation, but the neighborhood remained tense until late Friday night.
