CHICALIM: Residents of Chicalim have demanded immediate action against alleged illegal permanent vendors operating in a residential area, claiming the encroachments have become a major nuisance and are affecting the quality of life of local residents.
During a meeting, villagers stated that the spaces were originally earmarked only for movable hand carts and temporary vending. However, they alleged that several vendors have erected permanent structures in violation of the original purpose for which the sites were allotted.
The residents claimed that the unauthorised structures have resulted in several civic and law-and-order issues. They alleged that incidents of eve teasing in the area have created a sense of insecurity among women and young girls.
Villagers also raised concerns over the alleged illegal parking of taxi vehicles on public roads, saying it causes traffic congestion and hampers the free movement of pedestrians and motorists.
They further alleged that open urination, indiscriminate dumping of garbage and poor sanitation have made the locality unhygienic. According to the residents, the accumulation of waste has led to foul odour and potential health hazards, affecting the residential character of the area.
The villagers urged the concerned authorities to inspect the site and remove all alleged illegal permanent structures from the residential zone. They maintained that only movable hand carts, as originally permitted, should be allowed to operate in the designated spaces.
They also called for stricter enforcement against illegal parking, improved sanitation measures and regular monitoring to prevent misuse of public spaces. The residents warned that if timely action is not taken, the issues could worsen, further impacting the safety, hygiene and overall well-being of the Chicalim community.
