VASCO: In a shocking and bizarre incident, The Chicolna-Bogmalo panchayat has recovered about 19 dead cows and buffaloes from its jurisdiction in the last four.
The panchayat authorities suspecting foul play, have now reported the matter before Vasco police.
Speaking to Media Bogmalo Sarpanch Sankalp Mahale informed that the panchayat, besides setting up an investigation, will also try and have a Gowshala to take care of stray cattle in the area.
“The first case of a cow death was reported three days ago, and we found it normal because there is a large number of stray cattle here due to the grazing land. We did not pay heed, but then we started finding more dead cows, which was strange, and we began getting many more pics of dead cows on WhatsApp as well. We did not realise what was happening, and we assumed that the Cows may have died due to old age as the dead cows looked old, and since there was a foul stench, we disposed of the dead cows at our level.,” he said.
However, we found a young cow in the area today, and we found something fishy because the number of dead cows had been increasing every passing day, with the number of total dead cows to 18 and one buffalo as well. We decided to call a veterinarian, and they asked us to write to Vasco police, and we have done. “The doctors have taken samples, and primary investigation suggests that it is a shock death, and we will get more details after the post-mortem,” said Mahale.
He said there were reports of Cows going missing ahead of some festivals in the village two years ago, and some even said that people tie the cows and take them away later.
The locals and animal lovers tried to free such cows during that time, but this sudden death of around 19 stray cattle raised our suspicion again. We have now decided to protect the stray cattle who come here for the grazing land, and we along with the PFA in coordination with the Dhyaan Foundation, have written to the Chicolna communidade asking for some land to set up a Gowshala to protect the stray cattle from Bogmalo and surrounding areas ” said Mahale
