PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today said that henceforth teachers will be held accountable for students’ poor performance, which in turn affects the state’s national average score.
CM Sawant was speaking during the state-level conference on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
“Why are students scoring below the national average? Who is to be blamed? People are blaming the government and the Chief Minister being the Education Minister,” said CM Sawant
He further said that teachers will henceforth be held accountable for the student’s poor performance.
“It seems like Goa is just generating graduates; it is just like pushing numbers; it feels sad that institutions in Goa not coming forward to submit proposals to begin new courses as done in other states,’ he added.
Sawant said that the New Education Policy 2020 will be implemented in institutes of higher education in Goa, including professional colleges, from the next academic year.
“I have been monitoring the implementation of the NEP since it begins. This policy will give us quality education,” he added.
Speaking on school closure, CM Sawant said that the state government does not intend to close the schools to benefit other schools.
“My government cares for the future of the students. We want to address concerns of the students with fewer teachers,” Sawant said.
CM also said that schools must use a cooperative approach rather than a competitive approach so that no student is neglected.
“Schools focus is only on achieving 100 per cent results, and then the state government is blamed for unemployment,” he said.
Sawant said that education must be skill-based to ensure students are human resource ready.
Goa students’ average score continued to be considerably below the national average in mathematics across the classes of III, V, VIII and X. The National Achievement Survey (NAS) report 2021 released on Wednesday threw up the same results for mathematics from Goa students as the previous surveys. In Class III, students from Goa, on average, scored 299 (out of 500) as compared to the national average of 306 in mathematics.
Similarly, the score for Class V in maths was 274 for Goa students, as against 284 nationally. The NAS is conducted under the state councils for education research and training, where the school students take the test under a monitored environment.
