PONDA: The Commuters traveling on Ponda- Margao highway demand safety railings at the accident-prone Bythokhol- Borim sharp turn, located on a steep slope, to prevent fatal accidents. Over the past two decades, Bythokhol-Borim sharp turned on a slope in the news and had earned a bad name due to several accidents, including fatal accidents. There are incidents of many types of vehicles, after losing control, fell into a roadside ravine or deep valley at Bythokhol-Borim as there are no safety railings nor road is straightened.
It may be recalled that on Tuesday, 10 May, Vinayak Chari (44) from VelipWada Uguem Cortalim Sanguem died in an accident at Bythokhol Borim when tempo he was driving from Ponda towards Borim lost control and fell into a dangerous roadside ravine/ valley located at left-side dangerous Bythokhol Borim Sharp turn on a steep slope. If there was a side railing, the chances were that the fatal accident could have been prevented.
After the vehicle fell into the valley, he was trapped in the cabin and seriously injured; however, Ponda Fire Personnel rushed and rescued him and shifted him to Ponda Sub District Hospital, where he succumbed to serious injuries.
Following the fatal accident, there has been growing demand among commuters on Margao- Ponda. Villagers of Kavlem, Borim demand roadside safety railings at Bythokhol Borim Sharp turn.
According to the Villagers of Borim and Ponda, the locals have been demanding improvement of roads and clearing a sharp turn to the roadside at Bythokhol Borim for many years, mainly due to frequent accidents. The locals have been demanding to widen and straighten the road on Bythokhol Slope; however, so far, no improvement has been made. For the past two decades, several accidents have occurred on the spot. Locals fears to drive at this vehicle due to its accident-prone nature.
