CANACONA: The Congress on Friday staged a public protest against the poor condition of the Chaudi Municipal Fish Market, demanding immediate action to restore hygiene and provide basic facilities for vendors and consumers.
Protesters gathered outside the market and later gheraoed the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Officer, seeking clarity on the timeline for improving the market, which they described as unsafe, unhygienic and a health hazard.
The demonstrators alleged that the market has long been plagued by foul odour, accumulated waste, poor sanitation and deteriorating infrastructure, creating an unhealthy environment for fish vendors and the public. They said repeated complaints have failed to yield any meaningful action.
The protesters also demanded better facilities for fisherwomen and fish vendors, including clean toilets, an effective waste management system, proper drainage and regular maintenance of the market.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders said the fishing community plays a crucial role in supporting the local economy and food security, but continues to be neglected. They urged the government and civic authorities to immediately inspect the market and undertake comprehensive renovation works without further delay.
The protest was organised under the campaign “Progressive Canacona” and was attended by several Congress leaders, youth representatives, women’s wing members, former panchayat representatives and local residents, who called for a clean, hygienic and safe fish market for the benefit of vendors and the public.
