New Delhi: Narendra Modi has directed a major reduction in the number of vehicles used in his official convoy, ordering a 50 percent cut as part of a broader push towards austerity, fuel conservation and responsible resource management.
The Prime Minister has also instructed the Special Protection Group, which handles his security arrangements, to increase the use of electric vehicles in the convoy. However, he reportedly emphasised that no new vehicles should be purchased specifically for this transition, signalling a focus on optimisation rather than additional expenditure.
Officials indicated that the SPG has already begun implementing the changes while ensuring that all mandatory security protocols under the official ‘Blue Book’ guidelines continue to be followed without compromise.
The austerity initiative is now being reflected across several BJP governed states. Leaders including Rekha Gupta, Bhajan Lal Sharma and Mohan Yadav have also reportedly decided to reduce the size of their official convoys.
The move comes at a time of growing global economic uncertainty, rising crude oil prices and increasing energy concerns linked to the ongoing tensions involving the United States and Iran. Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Modi recently appealed to citizens to adopt what he described as nationally responsible lifestyle choices aimed at strengthening India’s economic resilience.
He urged people to reduce unnecessary expenditure and dependence on imports while encouraging the use of locally made products. Stressing the importance of conserving foreign exchange reserves, the Prime Minister advised citizens to avoid non essential gold purchases for one year and discouraged overseas vacations and destination weddings abroad.
Instead, he promoted domestic tourism and celebrations within India as part of a larger effort to support the national economy during a period of global instability.
The latest measures are being viewed as both symbolic and practical steps designed to promote fuel conservation, reduce avoidable expenses and encourage environmentally conscious governance at the highest levels of administration.
