CORTALIM: Cortalim MLA Anton Vas announced plans to establish a dedicated old age home in the constituency and has formally appealed to the Sancoale Communidade to allocate land for the project.
Vas made the announcement while speaking at the launch of a training programme on Kunbi saree making and handloom weaving organised under the Department of Handloom, Textile and Coir. The event was attended by department director Sandhya Kamat, ZP member Merciana Vas, sarpanch Ujwala Naik, social worker Roquezinho D’Souza and other dignitaries.
Highlighting the need for a facility to support the elderly, Vas said that a proposal has been submitted to the Sancoale Communidade seeking around 4,000 square metres of land. “There are three major Communidade bodies in the constituency—Sancoale, Quelossim and Cortalim. These bodies own vast parcels of land, and I have written to the Sancoale Communidade requesting that they take up the issue and pass my proposal during their meeting,” he said.
Calling it a “public beneficial project,” Vas expressed hope that the Communidade would support the initiative. “While the government may be ready to assist in building the old age home, we require the land to initiate the project. I am optimistic that our request will be approved,” he added.
The MLA emphasised that the facility would benefit many elderly residents and called on all Communidade bodies to extend their support. “This project can improve the lives of senior citizens, and I appeal to the Communidades to come forward for this noble cause,” he said.
Vas also highlighted several people-centric initiatives already launched in Cortalim under his leadership, including the Cortalim Farmers Club, Cortalim Villagers Sports Club, Cortalim Kala Kendra, Cortalim Marketing Cooperative Society, Goa Dairy Cooperative Society, and the Fisheries Cooperative Society. “The old age home will be another important addition to these community welfare initiatives,” he stated.
In addition, Vas urged local schools to support cultural awareness by bringing students to witness the Kunbi fabric training. “I appeal to all schools to send at least ten students to this centre so they can learn about the Kunbi fabric and the process of creating traditional items. This early exposure will spark interest in our heritage and promote the revival of this iconic Goan weave,” he said.
