VASCO: Councillor of ward no 16, Girish Borker, was on Thursday elected unopposed as the Chairperson of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).
It may be recalled that Councillor Leo Rodrigues had recently resigned from the post of Chairperson after a mutually agreed tenure of one year had ended.
The formalities and procedures to elect a new Chairperson for MMC began after the resignation was tendered by Rodrigues and submitted to the DMA.
While the official elections to elect the new Chairperson was to be held on Friday morning, the last date to file nomination for the Chairperson post was Thursday.
Councillor Girish Borkar, considered close to Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, filed his nomination Thursday morning before the MMC Chief Officer Jayant Tari.
No other councillor filed nominations for the post of MMC Chairperson, enabling Girish Borker to become the unopposed Chairperson of MMC.
Girish Borker will officially take over as the new MMC Chairperson after the election formalities are completed on Friday.
Speaking to the media later, Girish Borker thanked all the councillors for having supported him unanimously for the post of Chairperson.
“I have to also thank the BJP party and CM Dr Pramod Sawant, Party president Sadanand Shet Tanavade, Minister Mauvin Godinho, MLAs Krishna Salkar, Sankalp Amonkar, ex MLA Carlos Almeida and Ex-Minister Milind Naik for their support to me. I have great plans for the MMC, and I will take up a large scale of development works. I want to resolve the garbage menace in the Council jurisdiction on priority,” said Borker.
Newly elected unopposed Chairperson Girish Borker has said that resolving garbage issue will be his top priority.
