New Delhi: FIFA has announced strict new rules for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, introducing red card penalties for players who cover their mouths during confrontations, as part of a broader effort to curb racism in football.
The decision was finalised following discussions with the International Football Association Board. Under the new regulation, referees may send off players who conceal their mouths while speaking during heated exchanges, especially if such actions are suspected to hide abusive or discriminatory remarks.
The move follows recent controversies in club football, including an incident involving Vinicius Junior, which intensified calls for stronger measures against racism. Football authorities believe that covering the mouth during altercations raises suspicion of inappropriate language and should be treated seriously.
Gianni Infantino has backed the rule, stating that players should be held accountable for their conduct and that there should be no room for hidden offensive remarks on the pitch.
In a separate change, FIFA also confirmed that players who walk off the field in protest against refereeing decisions could face immediate red cards. The rule extends to team officials who encourage such actions. Additionally, teams that abandon matches risk forfeiting the game entirely.
These measures come after a controversial incident during the Africa Cup of Nations final, where players temporarily left the pitch in protest, sparking widespread debate over discipline and match control.
The new regulations reflect FIFA’s effort to reinforce discipline, ensure fair play, and send a strong message against racism and unsporting behaviour as the global tournament approaches.
