PANAJI: A crackdown on allegedly contaminated spices and condiment powders sold in Goa’s markets has been launched by the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) directorate.
The FDA has gathered samples of several brands of masal, turmeric, and chilli powders for laboratory analysis in order to look for any signs of adulteration; the results are still pending.
There have been reports of dangerous substances like tartrazine and rhodamine B being added to some of the market’s spices and condiment powders. In a social media post, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane stated, “These additives are known as carcinogens and pose serious health risks, including cancer and other diseases.”
“FDA teams acted quickly to address this issue by starting inspections and gathering samples of different masala brands, along with powdered turmeric and chilli, for laboratory examination,” he added
The minister stated that he has instructed the FDA to carry out raids in this regard and that violators will face severe punishments.
“We are committed to removing such practices from the market because protecting public health is our top priority,” he stated.
Additionally, Rane has asked everyone to be on guard and notify the police of any strange products.
