PORVORIM: Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte has expressed the need of creating awareness about environment for the students through the syllabus to bring positive change in society.
Khaunte was addressing the annual function in his constituency to felicitate the SSC and HSSC students for the Academic Year 2020-21.
“As our children grow, the awareness about the environment is essential,” the MLA said, pointing out to the historic Save Mollem campaign, which was propelled by the young generation.
“The young generation was completely involved in the campaign against environmental destruction through three linear projects. There was awareness about the impact of these projects for which students stood up,” he said.
Khaunte asserted that there is a need to understand the climate change phenomenon in Goa, considering the intensity of the floods and other phenomena currently witnessed by the coastal state.
“We have to understand how climate change is impacting us. Such kinds of floods were never heard of in the past. Some say it is due to the destruction of Western Ghats. One has to understand Goa, which is Hill to Ocean state. The destruction happens when we deal with the projects, without a scientific approach,” Khaunte added.
Referring to the lives of students and teachers during a pandemic, Khaunte said that the basic idea of introducing a cyberage scheme was “equality to education.” “When education was shifted online due to pandemic, the cyberage scheme was stopped. We had to understand that due to pandemic, lot of jobs were saved, there were salary cuts and for many procuring gadgets had become a challenge.”
He recalled how his office and corporate houses, and like-minded people distributed smartphones to around 100 needy students. “But then, the next challenge was about connectivity. We introduced free wifi connection at science and technology park. The concept where students can sit, plug in their gadgets and attend online classes,” Khaunte stated.
He said that the concept of community learning, which had gone into the memory lanes, came up again through this park.
Khaunte said that the challenge before teachers is to teach in such a situation. “We had told the government that let teachers be at home and let them decide the curriculum and teach. But the chief minister’s plans were different, the teachers were called at school, and when they go back home, they were asked to teach,” he said.
