New Delhi: A massive statewide inspection drive targeting coaching institutes has been launched across Uttar Pradesh following a recent tragic incident in the state capital, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directing authorities to take strict action against establishments operating in violation of safety regulations.
The coordinated operation involved teams drawn from the police, district administration, development authorities, fire services and electrical safety departments, who carried out simultaneous inspections in major education hubs including Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Meerut and Agra.
The large scale enforcement campaign has already led to the sealing of more than 100 coaching institutes after officials discovered serious irregularities and safety shortcomings that could endanger students and staff.
Inspectors examined approved building plans, emergency exits, fire fighting arrangements, electrical systems and overall structural compliance during raids that continued across several districts late into the night. Authorities also focused on identifying institutions operating without registration or official approval from urban planning bodies.
The extent of non compliance emerged sharply in Prayagraj, where only a small number of registered coaching institutes were found to possess valid fire safety clearances. In response, multiple specialised teams were deployed to inspect the remaining centres and verify their adherence to regulations.
Several prominent institutions faced action during the drive, while authorities in Kanpur’s Kakadeo area, one of the state’s largest coaching hubs, sealed dozens of establishments for serious violations. Investigators found that many institutes had illegally converted basement parking areas into overcrowded classrooms without adequate ventilation or emergency evacuation facilities.
Similar action was reported from Mirzapur, where several coaching centres were shut down for structural violations and failure to meet safety requirements.
In Varanasi, joint teams inspected coaching institutes and commercial libraries, resulting in the closure of multiple establishments that lacked approved building plans or basic fire safety infrastructure.
Officials have confirmed that the inspection campaign will continue across additional districts as the administration seeks to eliminate unsafe educational spaces and ensure stricter compliance with safety norms throughout the state.
