New Delhi: European champions Spain and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal will look to secure places in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup when they take the field in crucial knockout fixtures on Thursday.
Spain will take on Austria in Los Angeles, knowing that victory could set up a blockbuster showdown with Portugal in the next round. The Spanish side arrived at the tournament among the favourites but have endured a mixed campaign so far, beginning with a surprise draw against Cape Verde before registering convincing wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Coach Luis de la Fuente believes his team are peaking at the right moment and insists the squad is rediscovering the rhythm and confidence required for a deep run in the competition.
Spain are also keen to avoid a repeat of their recent World Cup disappointments after suffering elimination in penalty shootouts in both the 2018 and 2022 editions of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Portugal face Croatia in Toronto in what could prove to be a memorable occasion for two of football’s enduring icons. The match may represent the final World Cup appearance for either Ronaldo or veteran Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić, both of whom are now over 40 years old.
Portugal midfielder Vitinha described Modric as an inspiration to players across generations but made it clear that Portugal’s focus remains firmly on progressing to the next stage.
Later in the day, Algeria will attempt to keep African hopes alive when they face Switzerland in Vancouver. Algeria are aiming to become only the second African nation after Morocco to advance beyond the current knockout stage.
Thursday’s fixtures come after a dramatic day of action that saw England, Belgium and the United States all secure their places in the last 16 following thrilling victories.
