MARGAO: A political controversy has emerged after the Goa government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for infrastructure development, drawing strong criticism from South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes.
Reacting to the agreement, Fernandes expressed shock and alleged that the MoU would facilitate the controversial railway double-tracking project. He said the decision comes at a time when people across Goa are protesting against coal transportation and railway double-tracking.
Accusing the government of ignoring public sentiment, Fernandes said the state was “adding salt to the wounds of Goans” by supporting projects that, according to him, benefit corporate interests. He asserted that he would take the issue to the people and continue opposing any move that promotes double-tracking and increased coal transportation through Goa.
Defending the government’s decision, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the MoU with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is aimed at accelerating infrastructure development in the state. He stated that the proposal has received Cabinet approval and that, with support from the Central Government, the agreement is expected to fast-track key infrastructure projects across Goa.
The MoU has sparked a fresh political debate, with the ruling government maintaining that it is focused on infrastructure development, while the opposition has questioned whether the agreement could advance the contentious double-tracking project.
