FATORDA: Goa BJP president Damu Naik has said he is ready to contest the 2027 Assembly election from Fatorda if directed by the party leadership, setting the stage for a potential electoral contest against Goa Forward chief and incumbent MLA Vijai Sardesai.
Naik said his candidature would depend on the decision of the BJP leadership, but asserted that Fatorda would be among the constituencies where the party expects to emerge victorious in the 2027 elections.
“I will contest the upcoming election from Fatorda if my party tells me to descend into the battlefield,” Naik said.
Claiming that the BJP would win 30 seats in the next Assembly election, Naik said he expected the lotus to bloom in Fatorda as part of the party’s projected tally.
Naik also rejected suggestions that his possible candidature from Fatorda was linked to ambitions of becoming Chief Minister. He alleged that vested interests were deliberately creating such a narrative.
Taking direct aim at Sardesai, who has represented Fatorda since 2012, Naik said he was prepared to take on the Goa Forward leader and challenged him to a public debate on the development works carried out in the constituency over the past 15 years.
The BJP leader also accused Sardesai of failing to oppose the proliferation of high-rise buildings in Fatorda. Naik alleged that several residential and commercial projects had received approvals with a floor area ratio (FAR) of 300 per cent.
“Is the Fatorda MLA not a member of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority? Let him show whether he had opposed any of the housing and commercial projects at SGPDA meetings during his 15-year tenure as MLA,” Naik said.
