VASCO: In a novel initiative, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has directed the Water Resources Department (WRD) contractors to deploy a de-weeding machine in the fields of Orulem to prevent waterlogging in low-lying areas. Alongside Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker and WRD officials, Salkar conducted a joint inspection of the ongoing de-weeding works.
“This is the first time we have asked the WRD to use a de-weeding machine here. This machine will clear the area and desilt the lake’s base, increasing its water storage capacity and preventing overflow onto roads,” Salkar explained. He emphasized that enhancing the water holding capacity of nearby lakes and water bodies is crucial to mitigating waterlogging in this low-lying region. Despite natural water flow into the area during heavy rains, the increased capacity should help manage the excess water more effectively.
Salkar highlighted the success of recent efforts in Vasco, where extensive gutter cleaning and desilting of nullahs have prevented flooding, even during torrential rains. “After years, Tanya Lake is weed-free and people are even talking about boating. This success shows that proper maintenance can prevent flooding,” he noted. However, he acknowledged the persistent challenge in Orulem and Belabai due to their low elevation.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borker echoed these sentiments, noting the historical flooding issues in Orulem. “Vasco MLA Krishna Sarkar’s initiative to desilt nearby lakes aims to increase their water storage capacity, offering a temporary solution to waterlogging. The community has high expectations from our MLA after decades of inaction,” Borker said. He assured that ongoing efforts include road expansion, new culverts, and other flood prevention measures, though these require time due to government formalities and tender processes.
