PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today said that the declaration of Emergency by Indira Gandhi was indeed one of the darkest times in the history of India’s Democratic Journey.
“Declaration of Emergency by Indira Gandhi was indeed one of the darkest times in the history of India’s Democratic Journey,” said Sawant
He further said that this day is rightly observed as a ‘Black Day,’ serving as a reminder of when the Congress Government misused its power to silence the media, opposition leaders, and the people of India.
“Today, I honour and salute the brave leaders who stood up against this draconian regime,” he added
Sawant said that their perserverance and commitment brought democracy back to life in our nation.
The Emergency in India was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency across the country by citing internal and external threats to the country.
Officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352 of the Constitution because of prevailing “internal disturbance”, the Emergency was in effect from 25 June 1975 and ended on 21 March 1977.
The order bestowed upon the prime minister the authority to rule by decree, allowing elections to be cancelled and civil liberties to be suspended.
