New Delhi: Authorities have announced extensive traffic restrictions on the Delhi–Haridwar National Highway and the Ganga Canal road in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual Kanwar Yatra. Heavy vehicles will face restrictions from July 30, while a complete ban on all vehicles will remain in force on these routes from August 4 to August 12.
The Kanwar Yatra, one of the country’s largest annual religious pilgrimages, will be held from July 30 to August 11. During the yatra, lakhs of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, travel to Haridwar to collect holy Ganga water, which they later offer at Shiva temples in their hometowns.
According to traffic authorities, a designated stretch of the Delhi–Haridwar National Highway will be reserved exclusively for Kanwariyas during the pilgrimage. The move is aimed at ensuring the safe and uninterrupted movement of devotees while reducing the risk of accidents along the busy route.
As part of the traffic management plan, heavy vehicles will be diverted from July 30, while all categories of vehicles, including private and commercial transport, will be prohibited from using the affected stretches between August 4 and August 12. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes and plan their journeys in advance to avoid inconvenience.
The district administration has also strengthened security and emergency arrangements ahead of the yatra. Police divers will be stationed at major bathing points along the Ganga Canal road to ensure the safety of pilgrims visiting the water bodies during the festival.
In addition, a temporary police station has been established at Rampur Tiraha on the Delhi–Dehradun National Highway to monitor the pilgrimage and respond quickly to any emergencies. Around 20 police personnel will be deployed at the temporary facility under the supervision of a designated station house officer.
Authorities have urged commuters to follow traffic advisories and cooperate with officials during the Kanwar Yatra, as lakhs of pilgrims are expected to pass through the district over the coming days.
