CALANGUTE: Authorities commenced the demolition of portions of Nazri Beach Resort at Naikawaddo, Calangute, a property reportedly linked to Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, in compliance with judicial directives arising from Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) violations.
Heavy machinery was deployed at the site as officials initiated the removal of structures identified for demolition.
Excavators were seen dismantling parts of the building while authorities supervised the operation.
Nazri Beach Resort, a ground-plus-four storey structure spread across approximately 1,500 square metres, was found to be in violation of CRZ norms.
The demolition order was originally issued by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) in 2018.
The matter subsequently went through multiple rounds of litigation, with the resort’s challenge being dismissed by both the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Supreme Court, which upheld the demolition order.
Despite the legal clearances, the demolition was not executed by the GCZMA, prompting the filing of a petition before the High Court. During proceedings in February 2026, a firm linked to Lobo submitted an undertaking to the court, assuring that the unauthorised portions would be manually demolished.
Based on the undertaking, the court granted a final deadline of May 31, 2026, for completion of the demolition. With the deadline having expired, demolition activities commenced at the site on Monday.
Visuals from the location showed heavy machinery dismantling portions of the structure as officials monitored compliance with the court’s directives.
The development marks the latest chapter in a long-running legal battle over the resort’s alleged CRZ violations and enforcement of coastal protection regulations in Goa.
