New Delhi: In a scathing critique, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav targeted the Yogi Adityanath government over its handling of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Speaking in Etawah on Sunday, Yadav highlighted the stark contrast between the government’s grand promises and the harsh realities faced by devotees. The event, which began on January 13 and will conclude on February 26, has been marred by a deadly stampede on January 29 that claimed 30 lives, raising serious concerns about crowd management and safety.
Yadav accused the government of prioritizing publicity over the welfare of pilgrims, pointing out that despite claims of preparing for 100 crore visitors, many were left without basic necessities like food. He noted that the government’s emphasis on inviting prominent figures only added to the public’s trust, which was subsequently betrayed by the lack of adequate arrangements. “This is not a double-engine government… This is a ‘double-blunder’ government,” Yadav emphasized, criticizing the BJP’s economic policies as well.
The SP chief also expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to deliver on economic promises, such as doubling incomes and creating jobs. He suggested extending the Maha Kumbh dates to ensure more people can participate safely, given the current logistical challenges.
