PANAJI: The Supreme Court of India has ordered the release of Ryan Fernandes, who has been serving a life sentence in the 2005 case pertaining to the murder of his father-in-law Dr Shrikant Verekar.
“The decision taken by the Board in its meeting held on 16.06.2021 is quashed and set aside; the petitioner herein is directed to be released forthwith,” the SC order states.
The apex court pointed out in its order the statement of SP North that family members consisting of mother and wife are ready to accept the prisoner if released prematurely.
The Supreme Court order came in the matter wherein petitioner Ryan had challenged the order of the State Sentence Review Board held on 16.06.2021, rejecting the proposal for his premature release.
Fernandes married Verenkar’s
daughter, but the couple was not living together, and the marriage failed.
According to the police theory, Ryan planned the murder to get hold of Verenkar’s house and eventually his property, as his father-in-law didn’t have a son.
Verenkar, 60, was abducted from Mangor Hill, Vasco, when on a morning walk by Fernandes and his accomplices, who came in a red car on the morning of January 17, 2005.
