CANACONA: Two hotels, Mangesh Hotel and the adjacent Nilesh Hotel, were burgled at Chaudi, Canacona, early Thursday night after thieves allegedly entered the establishments by breaking through their rooftop shutters.
Nitin Kenkare, owner of Mangesh Hotel, said the thieves stole around Rs 9,200, mostly in coins, which had been kept aside for the hotel’s next day’s operations.
However, the thieves reportedly failed to find anything of value at the neighbouring Nilesh Hotel.
The incident, which took place in the heart of Canacona’s commercial hub at Chaudi, has raised concerns among local residents over nighttime security.
Kenkare expressed surprise that the theft occurred at a location where police personnel reportedly rest during night patrols, under the old jackfruit tree near the two hotels.
“If the police were on night duty, this theft would not have happened,” Kenkare said, while stressing the need for regular police patrolling at night.
Referring to the recent major fire incident in Vasco, he said there was a need to ensure police presence during nighttime across different parts of Goa.
Police personnel reportedly visited the hotels and discussed the incident with the owner. However, no formal police complaint was filed by the hotel owner.
Kenkare said he was concerned that filing a complaint could require the hotel to remain closed until the police investigation was completed, potentially resulting in the spoilage of preparations and other items kept inside the establishment.
