PANAJI: Prompt and coordinated efforts by Drishti Marine lifesavers helped avert multiple incidents along Goa’s coastline over the long holiday weekend, with five persons rescued from drowning, two missing children traced and reunited with their families, and a lost mobile phone returned to its owner.
At Baga beach, three tourists from Pune — including a 44-year-old woman and two teenagers — found themselves struggling to return to shore after strong waves hit the river adjoining the beach. Lifesavers Siddesh Bhosle and Achchini Pamegam carried out a swift rescue using boards, safely bringing all three back.
In a separate incident along the Baga–Calangute stretch, a five-year-old boy from Kerala who went missing was traced at Calangute beach. Lifesavers Deepak Lamani, Ankur Choudhary and Nilfer Usgaonkar conducted a search operation and reunited the child with his mother in the presence of police.
At Sinquerim beach, a 30-year-old man was dragged further into the sea by a rip current while wading in waist-deep water. Lifesaver Ajay Gaonkar intervened quickly and rescued him using a rescue tube.
Colva beach saw two incidents, including a six-year-old girl from Ponda who was found alone and crying. Lifesavers launched a search and used public announcements to locate her family, successfully reuniting them after due verification. In another case, a mobile phone found during patrol was returned to its owner with police assistance.
At Agonda beach, a 25-year-old tourist from Karnataka was rescued after being pulled into rough waves while swimming. Lifesaver Kapil Velip responded promptly, bringing him safely ashore.
Authorities have urged beachgoers to remain cautious, follow warning flags, and adhere to instructions issued by lifesavers to prevent such incidents.
