New Delhi:
In a heartfelt tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered the late Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s 14th Prime Minister, as an epitome of simplicity and a beacon of leadership. Dr. Singh, who passed away on December 26 at the age of 92, left an indelible mark on India’s economic and social landscape.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, renowned for his honesty and simplicity, breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. His death was announced after he was treated for age-related medical conditions and experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite immediate resuscitative measures and emergency care at AIIMS, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
PM Modi’s tribute highlighted Dr. Singh’s significant contributions to India’s development. “Dr. Manmohan Singh’s life was a reflection of his honesty and simplicity. He was a distinguished parliamentarian and economist who dedicated himself to reforms,” PM Modi stated. Dr. Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 under the Congress-led UPA government was marked by transformative economic reforms and social welfare initiatives.
As Finance Minister in the cabinet of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Dr. Singh played a crucial role in steering India out of a severe economic crisis in 1991. His leadership during this period redefined India’s economic trajectory, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. His government also implemented landmark policies such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which significantly improved the lives of millions of Indians.
Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh, and three daughters. His legacy as an honest leader, a great economist, and a champion of reforms will continue to inspire future generations.
