PANAJI: FC Goa staged an impressive resurgence, overturning a one-goal disadvantage to secure a well-deserved 2-1 victory against East Bengal FC at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on Saturday in the Indian Super League. Naorem Mahesh Singh initiated the scoring in the first half, paving the way for Sandesh Jhingan and Victor Rodriguez to later seal FC Goa’s triumphant comeback.
East Bengal have had a varied beginning to their season, managing to accumulate four points from three matches. On the other hand, the Gaurs have showcased promising form in the early stages of the season, clinching two victories in their first two encounters.
FC Goa’s head coach, Manolo Marquez, attended the post-match press conference, expressing contentment regarding his team’s recent performance. Moreover, he exuded confidence in their upcoming encounter against Bengaluru FC.
He was of the opinion that the proficiency of his team in the offensive zone proved to be the decisive factor in the outcome, as he stated, “In the initial period, East Bengal FC exhibited a commendable performance, while FC Goa proved their superiority in the latter half. However, it is noteworthy that our team displayed greater efficiency in terms of scoring goals compared to East Bengal FC.”
The Gaurs have emerged victorious in their initial three matches in the Indian Super League (ISL) this season, positioning themselves second in the standings, right behind Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
When asked about this achievement of the team, the coach replied, “In this season, it is favourable that every team plays an equal number of matches after each round. The crucial aspect, in my opinion, is achieving nine points in three games. We have the opportunity to secure the top position, either as the first or second ranked team. However, it is worth noting that the standings can occasionally be perplexing.”
Now, we are directing our attention to our upcoming game in Bengaluru, which will take place in three days. It is anticipated to be another challenging match. Our priority is to facilitate the recovery of our players, and we are confident that we will be fully prepared for the game, he added.
