PANAJI: An adult female leopard that accidentally fell into an open well at Loliem in Canacona was successfully rescued by the South Goa Forest Division and safely released back into its natural habitat after undergoing a veterinary examination.
According to the Forest Department, the rescue operation was launched immediately after the incident was reported. Using specialised rescue equipment and under the supervision of veterinary experts, the team safely extricated the leopard from the well. The animal was examined by veterinarians and found to be uninjured before being released into the forest within a few hours.
The successful operation drew praise for the coordinated efforts of the Forest Department and the veterinary team. Deputy Conservator of Forests (South Goa Division) Santosh Reddy, IFS, along with officers, frontline forest staff and veterinary personnel, were commended for their professionalism, swift response and commitment to wildlife conservation.
The rescue highlights the Forest Department’s continued efforts to protect Goa’s wildlife and ensure the safe coexistence of humans and wild animals while preserving the State’s rich natural heritage.
